Choosing Your Suspension
The Most Practicle Choice
The most suitable choice of suspension for predominantly asphalt use is the Rocker-Roller Suspension System (as shown below) because it is a fully load-sharing system that distributes the load across the entire chassis with the least amount of stress to all 'sprung' and 'unsprung' weight.......... in other words this is the most practicle suspension that minimises the rough ride on a chassis and caravan internal componants when driving over slightly corrigated roads. A propper load-sharing spring leaf suspension system does not require shock absorbers for normal asphalt use.
Chassis Type
- There are basically two types of steel that are used in the manufacture of chassis:
- Supa-Gal also known as 'Dura-Gal' . This material is made of galvanised steel (a silver surfaced material). Once welded the surface is prepared then undercoated and then a few coats of paint is applied. Over 85% of caravan chassis are manufactured using this method.
- Hot-Dip-Galvanised chassis - this chassis is made of 'blue metal' mild steel and afterwelding and fabrication the chassis is then dipped in a very hot galvanising solution.
- Both processes have proven to be equaly reliable as each other in terms of longevity and rust surfacing, however if the caravan application is moreso in a saltwater or extreme offroad (harsh conditions), it is best to use the Hot-Dip-Galvanised Method.
